BMWs E60 saloon was the BMW 5 series model that ran from 2003 to 2010 and this is one of the final. A diesel powered 5 series is pretty much the perfect executive saloon for anyone looking for performance, comfort and economy. These high quality cars are well built, comfortable and highly practical. As a result 5 series BMW's have long been the benchmark of the executive class - the car that everyone else tries to emulate. The SE Business Edition specification includes front and rear parking sensors which have both audio and visual readouts and this car has a luxurious full leather interior complete with heated front seats. Of course you also get all the usual "SE" refinements such as smart 17" alloy wheels and front fog lights but with this business edition model you also get widescreen satnav.
Having owned several E60 BMWs, I can honestly say these are one of my favorite cars of all time. No other 4dr saloon drives and handles quite like a BMW. The sharp, rear-drive chassis and direct steering ensure you will always feel entertained behind the wheel. This cars shape is a timeless and iconic design which looks suitable macho yet very classy. The 520d is a relaxing car to pilot. The turbo diesel engine is smooth and very powerful while the ride and handling are the best in its class. As a result, this car is soaks up the miles with ease.
This car looks simply stunning as you can see in the photos and I for one have fallen in love with her blend of performance and practicality. Hit the start button and the Turbo-diesel engine settles to a smooth, quiet idle. The 520d is will cruise along with an eerie silence and all the comfort of a large petrol engine and has a gruff warble that sounds sporty and reassuringly powerful. The 0-60 mph sprint takes just 8 seconds with a top speed of over 140 mph (not tested). The turn in is sharp and responsive with the taught chassis being aided by cornering brake control and BMW's ASC stability and traction control. With its perfect weight distribution, rear wheel drive and an advanced traction control system to keep the power in check, the 520d is great fun but also superbly safe and predictable.
A 5 series is one of the most accomplished executive saloons on the market - When you drive this car you feel reassured that you're in something that is well built, comfortable and safe. Automatic headlights and rain sensitive wipers help to make your life stress free and the large, multi-adjustable chairs are trimmed in high quality leather and are heated to provide the perfect place to unwind after a stressful day at the office. Whilst this is undoubtably a fast and capable performance car, the real joy of the 520d has to be the fact that whist it is fast and great fun to drive it will also deliver better fuel economy than most super-minis. On our 120 mile test drive I averaged around 50 mpg which is unbelievable for a car of this size and performance. This is a superbly stylish and comfortable car in which you could happily cross continents. The 5-series picks you up and whisks you away silently and without any fuss yet it covers ground at such a rapid pace that you will always arrive at your destination sooner than you thought.
The real beauty of this model is that whilst it is still a great car to drive it is also easy to live with, and economical to drive every day as well as hugely practical. A superbly stylish and comfortable sports saloon which looks superb and is guaranteed to turn heads. You may be able to tell that I enjoyed every minute behind the wheel of this car - you will too
