Vehicle description
This lot will be auctioned via Historics Classic and Sportscar Auctioneers, At the Ascot Racecourse sale on Saturday the 2nd of March 2024, High Street, Ascot, SL5 7JX. The direct steering of the Austin Healey combine the driving position, high-capacity engine and intoxicating exhaust note married together perfectly to offer the driver an experience like no other. The 100 model designation cars were the first of the Big Healeys with shells produced by Jensen Motors and delivered to Austins Longbridge plant where it was introduced to Austin underpinnings and christened the Austin-Healey 100. In 1955, the 100M, perhaps the most desirable model from the drivers standpoint, being marketed as a performance model or motorsport variant was fitted with larger carburettors, a specialised cold air intake box, high-lift camshaft and 8.1:1 compression pistons. These M-Spec cars were good for 110bhp and are easily identifiable by the louvred bonnet and belt. Interestingly, these modifications were also available a Le Mans Engine Modification kit which allowed existing Healey owners to convert their cars to M-Specification without the purchase of an entirely new vehicle. This particular 1956-registered 100 BN2 started out life in blue with a dark blue interior, a laminated windscreen and optional heater finally passing through the hands of local dealer, Charles Clark & Son Limited of Wolverhampton. The make-up of this car is of particular note, because it is constructed completely of lightweight aluminium coachwork (except boot lid) and it is believed to have a full M-Specification engine borne out by historic invoices and dynamometer tests complete with accompanying plaque and the louvred bare aluminium bonnet dispelling any doubt that this Healey is a true performance icon. The car has been repainted Primrose Yellow during the previous owners custodianship, the Willis family, with the work having been carried out to a high standard. Little used, it has nevertheless been subject of extensive care and attention by highly regarded marque specialists, JME Healeys of Leamington Spa, showing over £12,000 in expenditure to bring this Healey back to tip-top condition throughout and an insurance valuation set at £62,000 and ready for the next owner to enjoy. Included with the car is the V5C showing two prior owners, numerous old MoT test certificates as well as an entire lever arch file of history including a British Motor Heritage Certificate confirming the original specification.The seats and carpets are in good order as is the dashboard and Moto Lita steering wheel with restraint coming in the form of four-point competition racing harnesses and, to the rear, the spare wheel can be found. The bodywork and paint is in good order throughout and although the occasional shut-lines are not perfect, it should be remembered that this is nearly a 70-year-old car and is very much used for the purpose for which it was designed. The standard wire-wheels have been upgraded to a wider set of period-correct Cobra items which give the car an impressively aggressive stance with coachwork to match by the famous Rod Jolley. The fold-down windscreen is in excellent condition with no sign of wear and the car is presented in excellent condition throughout and would be an exciting addition to a grid of historic sprints, hill climbs or simply for spirited weekend use.Consignor, Edward Bridger-StilleInterested parties should note that the odometer was replaced in April 2021 and the mileage consequently reset at that point.Power-assisted Steering (PAS); Central Locking; Safety Belt Pretensioners
